Objective:

This course focuses on developing a strong understanding of computational thinking concepts, including decomposition, pattern recognition, and abstraction. Participants will learn how to break down complex problems, identify patterns, and simplify challenges to design effective solutions. Using either block-based coding or Python, learners will apply these concepts to solve real-world problems and create innovative solutions within Minecraft, demonstrating how computational thinking can be used for both technical and creative tasks.

 

Topics Covered:

  • Week 1-2: Decomposition, Pattern Recognition, Abstraction; basics of block-based coding or Python.
  • Week 3-4: Beginner-level challenges with block-based coding; explore real-world coding applications (e.g., basic automation, problem-solving).
  • Week 5-6: Intermediate-level problem-solving, focus on algorithms, abstraction, and recognizing patterns; experimenting with coding for slightly more complex tasks.
  • Week 7-8: Advanced coding puzzles and concepts; mastering decomposition and abstraction; applying skills to tackle advanced coding tasks.
  • Week 9-10 Assessment Project: Students design their own Minecraft coding challenge or reflect on how computational thinking applies to other subjects or real-world scenarios.

 

Outcome: By the end of this course, students will have developed strong computational thinking skills, including decomposition, pattern recognition, and abstraction. They will have applied these skills to create innovative solutions using block-based coding or Python, and have tackled challenges of increasing complexity within Minecraft. The final assessment project will showcase their ability to design unique coding challenges and reflect on the broader applications of computational thinking.
